Certificate vs Firearm license for airguns etc

I read some where that NSW had taken paintball markers/guns from requiring a firearms license to now requiring a Paintball marker certificate. Does any one know if this has been successful?

And what would people on here feel about a certificate requirement if it covered Paintball, Gel Blasters, Airsoft, and lead pellet firing airguns (of lower FPE) instead of having these items on a firearms license. I personally would like to see non lethal airguns sperated from firearms licenses and catorgories. Also administered by a separate organisation independant from Police.
The fear of things that look shooty shooty scary scary but are harmless but so heavily regulated or banned shows some in power do not understand what we really need protection from and what are sporting items or toys with no actual ability to do any more than leave a red mark.

It in a way makes more people apply for firearms licenses and purchase and own actually scary scary pew pew sticks which I thought the powers at be would prefer there were less off.

What are your thoughts.

Cheers.

I’ve said it for years…

The irony is if you regulate a toy the same way you regulate a firearm, with the same or similar licencing and storage requirements as real firearms (as they did in S.A.) then more people will be asking themselves why they just don’t buy the real steel and not bother with the toy. So more firearms in the community. :person_shrugging:

I can legally buy a used Beretta Inox through a firearms dealer for a fair chunk less than one of GBU’s so-called “custom” gel blasters.

Common sense doesn’t come into politics… never has.

I’m of the same thinking as @Friendly_Fire .
We already had laws in place governing the safe use and handling of “replica” looking “firearms”…

Anyone breaking those laws were dealt with accordingly and needed no further additional laws or regulations whatsoever.

Who knows what “threat” the Government dreamed up where these plastic toys suddenly became an issue for them, maybe all started from some pencil pusher needing to come up with some bullshit to meet his KPI’s for the month?

Instead of more regulations and procedures, they should just go back to treating them for what they are, plastic toys.
If someone uses them illegally under the old laws, then deal with them through those laws.

More regulations and procedures put fear into the general public by making them think that they must be dangerous if the Government treats them as such.

I don’t know what the answer is for this whole legal circus the Government has created, and can only hope that a possible future change of political parties might be the only opportunity to lobby hard on getting all this madness thrown into the bin and going back to common sense for everyone.

Agreed, it does make people who enjoy a very safe sport think, why jump thru all the hoops just to get a toy, I may as well just get an actual firearm.

In NZ I ran a airgun club when I was in my mid to late 20s, then the law changed in NZ and we were required to get a Firearms license (the then A class-Sporting rifles with semi restricted to 7 rounds for centre fire and 15 rounds for rimfire-may have been higher rounds for rimfires we went thru so many changes I cant actually remember the official round allowance per mag) for airguns over 44 FPE of muzzle energy (approx 60 Joules). I had about 30 club members but advertised and we were running a training/study and testing night at the club and opened it to other higher power airgun owners and we had about 50 airgunners turn up to take the test for firearm licensing. Every one who attended gained their firearms license with 2 having to resit on another night I beleave. But 50 new firearms license holders over night just from one club. If all the airgun clubs and non club airgunners (and the later numbered in the thousands) all got firearms licenses the number of new firearms shooters just went up by thousands. A real Opps moment from the Police who wanted less firearm holders but had to issue the new licenses as the Govt ( Politicians) had made it a law and the airgunners would be at a dis advantage and have to hand in their airguns. So after the knee jerk reaction from the Politicians thousands of new firearms license holders were born, no forms to fill out after gaining the license, just go and buy an A Catorgory rifle or shotgun.

Just shows Politicians don’t really know what’s best but by meddling and knee jerking (some other jerking too I bet) shot themselves in the foot (pun intended).

From there I went on to Catorgory B (Pistols/handguns) and Cat E (MSSA or Military Style Semi Automatics which is an oxy moron in itself). I didn’t get C (Collector, not able to fire) or D (Dealer). All because the government had a knee jerk reaction do 1x death of an undercover officer who was shot by gang members when they heard him placing a tracking device on one of their cars, the gang also had illegal A cat, B Cat and E Cat firearms which they could have used but didn’t want to kill what they thought was an oportunistic burglar as that would bring the heat down on them which they needed to avoid. Sadly they fired numerous shots and 4 struck the officer in the side and passed thru the ribs (.177 cal) and managed to puncture a lung causing the officer to bleed out and pass away up the road. 1x death and the law got changed. When really what was needed was a tightening down of gang access to firearms and raids on gang pads were required but never eventuated in the way they needed to.
There were already laws in place but the politicians felt even more were needed. RIP the undercover officer. Years later I worked out of the same Station as he did.

It goes to show that knee jerk reactive laws have consequences and the Govt handed out tickets to the show, 1000s of them, lucky for the Police these were law abiding people who would not shoot at Police unlike the gangs.

Cheers.

Yes I agree there are laws on the books already to deal with misuse of replicas and actual boom boom sticks. The Sydney attack and murders had nothing to do with gel blasters etc but had everything to do with people who wanted to break the law to achieve an outcome. So the new laws that have been knee jerked in at speed mean nothing, absolutely nothing, zero, nada, zip and are not worth the paper they were printed on as the law was broken by the two shooters as they did not care about the law in the first place or society and respect for peoples life, so what makes new, extra laws on top of what was already in place all of a sudden like magic work? they don’t.

The shooters blatantly disregarded the law as they wanted to harm and hurt people and as long as some people hold these harmful views and want to murder innocent people then they will still disobey the new laws and let their hatefulness spill over (it does not matter the tool, be it gun, knife, bat, car, explosives etc). No new law will stop that. The elephant remains in the room.

Im not having a go at this forum at all and know most of you guys know all this already, my frustration is directed to the Politicians who love jerking in all its forms.

I was thinking if airguns (Paintball, Gel blasters, airsoft, low power lead firing co2 airguns) were taken off from the firearms laws and a certificate (differing from a license) was issued and the administration given to a sporting or recreational body separating the airguns from the more powerful firearms the long-term sport/hobby may be able to be kept alive and if this was nationally approved in all states the sport would flourish and so many more business and fields/ranges would spring up boosting the economy also and creating hundreds possibly a thousand or more new jobs country wide. I know that it shouldnt be needed but once restrictive laws are in place they very rarely get nullified or ended but certification may keep the sheep happy that these nasty toys are regulated and accept it in a regulated form.

Who knows, but under the present Govt (Federal) I don’t see any positive changes coming, just more jerking when the next nutter who hates others breaks an already existing law to vent his small endowment rage.

Airsoft, Gel blasters, Paintballs and airguns (lower power) are not regulated by licensing in NZ and they don’t have chaos and doom and the sky still hasn’t fallen. Just wish Mr Albanese and the Premeirs of the other states (not Qld) would realise this.

Cheers.

Bingo BNIB Teararses brushed alloy 9mm was $700 out the door back in my day I was doing comp ISPC anyway, and still currently do a bit for my business as I’ve said before.

Beretta was out of my league wanted $1700. Counted me out. The Tearasrse 9mm never had a stoppage and I was running 800 rounds a day. Very good. On the pistol club range of course.

I think the thing is in my state anyway @OldGreynGrumpy I have to have it for business anyway to euthanize vermin. Pest control. But that is just the way it is here.

Includes Gel Blasters which same rules as real steel.

Sorry I’m not much help but that is what it is.

Correct, blabbo is finding out now. Knee jerk reaction with no forward sight or plan.

My state has allready had legislation in for background checks and medical which I do. Bloody sydney did not and how ASIO would have got on top of it, but they had a problem as ASIO got defunded. See new suck wales cancelled the massive east coast rail line right up to brisbane. Big mistake imo and costly sit there and collect dust now. Tsk tsk

I wanted a CZ Phantom or similar, couldn’t afford. Took the plastic fantastic-not, Glock 17. Affordable at $799 with 4 mags (a decade ago or more ago). No complaints apart from the wiggly, compressible plastic grip that really needs reinforcing so when gripping there is no movement transferred up and to the barrel. Used a aluminium molded lower on my upper once and it shot perfectly, none of the known Glock sidewise travel of shots across the target (right drift for right handers). Was not noticable much out to 15 yards but when shooting the 25yard service match or 50 yard match it was noticable. Never had the issue with CZ or various 1911 makes (with solid grips made from metal or stiff polymers). If you own an actual Glock made by Gaston himself (well his factory) take out the mag and grip the pistol with an average grip and look for flexing, it only needs to be minor to cause a round to be 1 inch or more to the right of point of aim at 25yards. It didn’t stop me winning club service matches but annoyed me that a design would have this flaw that other metal based pistol lowers did not.

But it was affordable for me at the time when I had just separated and didn’t have a free flow of cash to roll around in and when I went back to the heavier CZs and 1911s I always chewed out the bull/ten ring. A great feeling like a hole in one I guess for a golfer. 12 shots out of 12 in the 10 makes me grin.

Cheers.

Good fun isn’t it, nearly went state championship but got busy with work and just a hobby. Now given up.

Loved it got a few runs on full race guns 38 super with 26rnd mags etc. I was doing not too shabby. Standby, whack whack on the run but you know what I mean. Straight in the a zone, reload.

I even outdid Mel Gibson one day the RO said well there’s 2 eyes double tap. :+1:

Cheers for the chat

Love my CZ’s btw got a lower bore height axis so you can control rapid fire muzzle flip better than the FLOPS Glock plastic fantastic.

Got the SIG 320 X carry pro’s in, they are not bad, better than the Hipower we had to retire as they were getting long in the tooth as good as they were.

Speaking of imports new suck wales police got stitched up on dumbasses new laws for new Glocks  :face_with_peeking_eye:

What CZ did you have? I instructed newbies on the Kadet .22 with the fixed barrel/slide with only a small section within the slide at the rear moving at all. Bit like the AAP01 and WE Galaxy Hi Capa Premium I have. I like the idea of fixed barrels with only a bolt group moving under blow back to reload. The accuracy on the CZ Kadet was stunning. We had four of them in the club and they kept on keeping on week after week after week. The amount of ammo those 4 pistols must have gone through boggles my mind. They were a .22 version of the 75 series and had very similar weight but had the fixed barrels unlike the centrefire versions with the normal tilting barrel. I also liked the 85 combat, but then the Shadow line came out followed by the Phantom and all the top shooters in production IPSC seemed to be using them. They were very good.

That would be fun having a shoot against ole Mad Max, Keanu Reeves is a ardent IPSC and 3 gun shooter, pretty good to they say. He got Helle Berry into the sport as well.

SIGs were the Mercedes Benz of the Pistol world back in NZ for some time, they were priced out of my reach but I did enjoy shooting a few. We used the P226 in the Army, however I only got to use them a few times, gunners didn’t need pistols they kept telling me. I think they are retired now and the Glock is in.
The good ole high power was a good design for its time. Held its own for a long time before being superceded.

The .38 Super I have not fired. I have shot the 38 Special a few times but not in super. Used the .38 Special in my brothers lever action to save $$$ over the 357.
What is the Super like compared to a 9mm or 40cal?

Great memories of fun times.
Thank you Sir.

Awesome I agree on the SIG P226 I got close to one day years ago. But it had 20k rnds on it second hand and asking price was same as Tuaraus PT99AFS was cheaper so went for that instead back in the day.

Also had a Glock 22 in 40 short and weak. Very reliable, but not as accurate as the 9mm.

We had the the club training Glock M22 40s&w. We had round count on it training new applicants etc.

Four hundred and twenty thousand rounds the Glock did and it snapped in half at the ejection port. Operator was ok thankfully.

Contact Glock Austria, we’ll pay for shipping we’d like to study it.

Came back, right thanks for that with new barrel installed at no cost. And back in to service again as the club training pistol.

All truth I couldn’t believe it myself.

Glocks are great, they can get a bit flippy if you don’t get your recoil management under control.

I never got around to a CZ pistol actually owning one. But far out I’ve had a few goes on the CZ75 etc and they are constantly updating them.

CZ is much better than a Glock imo. But hey it’s just my opinion.

You can’t tell me this is not awesome

The price sucks though  :+1:

@OldGreynGrumpy what I was going to say about Maori NZ shearers.

Sorry bit off topic.

Great shearer and he got talking rolled up with his wife and children. Didn’t have $5 to scrape together. I need to feed my family.

I said well I’ve got some killers here. So did a few after knock off.

He said mate what’s the price, couple cartons of beer will stop me cold. Mate you are here helping me getting my sheep done. I got your back.

I said don’t worry about payment right now wait until get a few thousand up around the district then see how you going.

He thanked me so much kept his family fed for 2 weeks. I said you’re right mate you helped me least I can do :+1:
