CosmoX Sirius... Cosmo's Cosmic Adventures!

So got stuck into my mates son’s Cosmo. Pretty cool. First thing to not it is a gen8 style, not exactly gen8 spec. The front mounting pin holes are different as is the tpiece post screw. You could make it work, but the Cosmo box seems similar in quality material to gen8, maybe close to a singularity if I dare say!

First note is the nozzle is proprietary, as is the tpiece so hopefully the hot water trick works to get an alloy barrel in. Stock plastic barrel is only 210mm, adding an extra 30-40mm would let a hopup be added so hoping for that.

Next, spiral bevel and pinion gears! Pretty cool, unfortunately won’t be able to test the gears durability as when the anti reverse spring failed it has broken the tappet cam off the sector!

Metal spur gear wouldn’t fit in true gen8 form… but change the stock 8mm bushes and bearings to SHS slims and there is plenty of room for shimming! Yay! Also going for cast gears, metal rack piston, and spring from JG V2 boxes, all unused from boxes I upgraded before use so he can have those for free and keep the cost down!

It is getting a new piston head, o-ring, and red chi hai though… and alloy barrel gel gods willing.

Some other nice notes, the trigger and spring behave and stay put, I know bullshit right! Also cylinder head seals well, nozzle is a little leaky but can’t change that, and the cylinder is slotted/ported just a little over volume for a 210mm barrel, standard piston head and o-ring were reasonable but not great.

Also the amount of screws in the body is good for sturdiness but takes a while to get into. At least are all the same size!

So far pretty impressed, will have a video in time of course.

Done! Bit of a soak in warm water… followed by loads of scraping prying and isopropyl alcohol… and drilling out the super glue filled hole and boom! Plastic barrel out and alloy barrel in!

Wait for glue and thread lock to cure, then I can assemble!

In the mean time I know I have a 10a switch here somewhere! But do you think I can find it?!?!

I have one easyfet left… might just go that route if I can’t find the switch!

I got bag loads of those 10A switches :joy:
Great to see you were able to fit some cast metal gears, as those yellowed plastic ones look way past their use by date!

Interesting project and will be good to see the results. :+1:

They seemed strong but looks a bit brittle for sure. I could have drilled and fitted a pin to repair them, but would have had to grind some to suit, and glue… wait for glue… I have so many sets of cast gears it is way easier and quicker.

And this way it gets a red chi hai!
Cut the barrel to be just long enough to fit a hopup on.
Got it together and test fired on the bench seems like a win. Sounds good with decent for rate and has that satisfying “got my gen8 cranking” feeling many of us grew into the hobby with!

Will try and turn up the illusive 10a switch tomorrow, but it’s looking like an easyfet job, which is really probably the best outcome anyway, whatever keeps it going for longer between repair is best!

EasyFet would definitely be the best option for sure, then she’ll be a true old skool build! :joy:
Those slimline bushings have been a lifesaver in many different builds and never had any issues with them whatsoever turning or wearing patterns.

Definitely look a lot stronger than the standard Gen8 gearboxes and some nice cable management built into them, much better than the Gen8 internal wiring. :ok_hand:

@RokSolid That EasyFET fitment would actually be a good bit of content for your Youtube channel.

Back in the day several people (ZeHamish and I believe DocBob) tried explaining to me how to wire that FET into a Gen 8, but in true electronically dyslexic fashion, nothing adhered itself to my grey matter. :joy:

A dumbed-down, visual step by step guide, just for the boneheads like me would be awesome, man. :+1:

If only easyfet was still in production, good little unit. There are other similar ones around these days.

Maybe a shorter simple half install half explain video?

At least the Cosmos has a whole half acre of real estate in the body to fit electronics inside, whereas the Gen8 only had a tiny gap in the pistol grip base under the motor and the bottom of the grip, plus all internal wiring within the gearbox itself. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:
Those FETs are a great upgrade in any of those old Blasters though, especially with modified gears, springs, motors, and batteries they really get the power to where it’s needed most… instead of going up in LUCAS smoke through the trigger switch! :joy:

Yes loads of room in the Cosmo!
And since the battery is up front it actually needs less space and routing wires would be very simple.

Did find a 10a switch though, so will see what he wants to do
