Ok, HLF gen 8 ump repair complete.

Pulled it apart, and sure enough the piston head had cracked off…

That’s one old piston.

I think that Beastpro did the upgrade…circa 2017-2018…!!
Haven’t seen a clear transparent piston for awhile.

I went to xforce, they had a SHS piston, with the dual o-ring seal.
I’m a bit dubious about them…i’ve heard they are not great performers.
So, i fitted the original piston head ( it had a good seal) to the new piston body.

A quite good air seal, testing out of gearbox, so back in it went.

Reassembly was a pain.
Pulling it apart, it all pulled out easily enough.

Trying to put it back in, you have to flex the barrel / gearbox in.
It gets progressively tighter, as you feed it in.

It stubbornly refused to go all the way in, sitting about 6 cm out…

( yes, i re-routed the wires through the battery hole properly.)

I couldn’t get it in.
I suspect the inner barrel was snagging , on an internal obstruction.

The final solution was to pull the barrel out, feed the barrel in first, put the gearbox in , and then rejoin barrel into gearbox internally.

Not the best solution…but it worked.

Is that what others have had to do.??
I seem to remember people saying these were a pain to reassemble.
Any other tips / tricks.??

Anyway, in spite of dodgy barrel seal…it still goes ok .

Using xforce pinkies, it gets 250-280 fps on average.
A few 220’s, and a few 290’s…gel dependant.

I’ll try some dragon orbs, and see if it performs any better.

Whew, 2 UMP’s in 2 days…both blown piston heads…
I’m noticing a trend here…!!

Not sure what I did wrong. Maybe I am just special. 1st one lasted maybe 12 months and the 2nd one was 2nd-hand and died after only a few games.

Did you leave the battery in it overnight.?
Maybe that harms it.

Also, an expression of interest, regarding your mags.

You offered them to Rhino first, he has first dibs.

I dont know how many mags you have, but if he doesn’t want them all, i would be interested.

Please keep that in mind, if he doesn’t want them all…

Battery was not left in overnight. I will try and remember to dig out the mags when I go home to let you know how many I have left hopefully tomorrow.

It’s a tight fit, to get the battery in.

I was trying to get a kink memory shape, in the wire…

I normally do pull them out…

Yeah only way to get the upper in safely is to remove the outer barrel, install upper then install outer barrel.

Not too bad, bit annoying if the hopup also needs to be removed to get the barrel off… and to remove the hopup the flash hider removed from the metal outer barrel… gel blaster things!

I’ll have to see, how the outer barrel comes off.

I’ll pull it apart when I get more gearbox bits…I’ll grab a nylon gen8.
Maybe transplant the metal gears etc into it.

Is the outer hard to get off.?

It’s deceiving… it comes out easily , but just wouldn’t go back in.
The barrel is back in, but the seal is compromised for sure…

I don’t know what the current spring is.
But, no stronger than m100 for new nylon gearbox.?

I wouldn’t go over an m100 in a nylon box, or with a 460 motor as it will start struggle.
Also @DocBob could attest, the singularity gearbox shell is a solid beast! Singularity has better clearance for metal gears too, so no worries with the spur being tight.

The outer barrel should just unscrew, a normal clockwise thread.

I am not sure why I bought so many spare mags. I paid around $30 each for the mags but am happy to sell the unused ones for $15 each plus whatever the postage is. I am in Gladstone so pick up will probably not be an option. I will throw in a used mag or 2 if you buy some unused ones. Just let me know what you think.

Speaking of Singularity gearboxes… I found one in my box of sheissen today! Plus a spare set of 18:1 SHS gears… Lucky With Me, hey? If you know, you know :rofl:

Only thing is, I know the nylon Gen 8 motorcages are not a direct fit to Singularity shells… the old clear acrylic ones are. Ask me how I know this… :thinking:

Anyone got one of the older clear Gen 8 motor cages kicking around they don’t want? Happy to pay postage. :+1:

I always found the nylon ones tight but they fit… the clear ones did seem to fit easier.

I’ll have a look through my stuff and see what I can find.
