Maxim PDX review...cheap and cheerful

" And Alexander wept, for there were No New Worlds, to conquer…"

“And the community wept, because there were no new Blasters, to review…”

Not Quite.

Not Yet.

As newer models are a bit thin on the ground, i’m looking at the back catalogue, for cheap and cheerful models, i’ve previously overlooked.

Being cheaper, they are more likely to be simpler, and within my scope to have a crack at pulling apart…

Anyway, here’s the Maxim PDX from tacedge.

Theres Tan, and then there’s Tan…

Note the red dot riser, on the Scorpion. Much better sight picture now…
And, that Tan is growing on me…just needed some time to adjust to it…

50 shades of black…and a million shades of Tan…!!
  :scream:

Anyway, this is a solid, chunky little monkey…

it actually comes with no sights…the above pic is sporting the scorpion iron (plastic) sights.
I reckon they look good. I might try grabbing some real steel sights, if they are available…better than the plastic feel.

it comes with a lil stumpy magazine.
It looks … i wont say cute, i’ll say appropriate…for a compact package.

It takes normal M4 mags, so there is good compatability.

And, it still looks good, with a longer mag.

Stock is 3 posn extendable… and pinch both sides to remove.

Front muzzle is 14mm CCW removable…longer barrels and supps could be done…

Good level of detail, for a cheapy…

So, whats it like…??

A very solid, nylon build.
Think of it, as a scaled down ACR-10 build quality.

Nylon is very thick and sturdy.
After mucking around with the ABS Scorpion, this feels much more solid in your hand.

No need to handle with kid gloves.

The weight is fine…it would be a great gameday blaster…light enough but solid enough to run around with, and knock around, all day.

Scuff marks would be welcomed.

The smaller mag drops in / out easily, mag prime is solid…and its quite quiet standard.

Actually firing it, feels a little funny.
You tend to fire from the hip.

Its sorta pistol size, so one option is to hold / operate like a pistol, with stock retracted.

With stock extended, its still small form factor, so you really need to pull it in, and lean into it.

I reckon for this… a laser pointer would be ideal.
A red dot next…but you still have to target acquire through the reticle.
a laser sight would allow you top be " heads free" … although broadcasting your position.

Whatevs.

Next thing … the battery.

it comes with a 7.4 , xt30 batt…which is a bit too long.
You cant screw the cap cover back on.

Its designed to run on 7.4v… it will double fire on semi with a 11.1v.

Standard battery (Left) vs smaller 11v ( Rite).

The battery goes into the rear, and has a screw on cap.

The smaller battery fits in comfortably, has all cables tucked in, and cap screws on easily.

The supplied 7.4v, the battery occupies the whole length.
You have to forcibly bend wires, to get the battery plug in…and even then the cable still sticks out.

This is dangerous, not acceptable, and runs the risk of the stock banging into the exposed wires.

The stock won’t fully retract, with the wires protruding.
Currently, im running the smaller 11v…but it double fires on semi.
I use semi to ‘park the piston’ after use…but with 11v you really dont know where it is.

I’ll get a smaller 7.4v battery, and convert plugs to XT-30…sorted.

Finally … how does it go.?

Lower fps expectations were realised…

this was using 11.1v batt…

Pretty much what was expected, from china nowadays…
Using ihobby blues.

its a nylon box, running metal gears, so some potential for minor upgrades.
Airseal / oring / M95-m100 and see how it goes…short barrel blues…

Here is a youtube vid, for teardown reference…

He swaps the box, and gets it around 240-260 fps.
Don’t know which spring was in the new box etc.

So, for a day 1 review…initial thoughts…

PROS:
Solid build with good switches.
Quiet.
Expected performance.
Good value for $230.

CONS:
Battery doesn’t fit…new one required.
Ergonomics may not suit everyone…red dot / laser may be needed.

All in all, a different, good little blaster.
Would be good for kids etc, for durability and easy handling.

There are some good value, well made nylon blasters in the $200-250 range…
And can be upgraded to decent performance, quite cheaply…

Tac edge have these online only…no stock in store now.

This ain’t a bad look…

Normally underslung, a laser dot / light combo.

Mounted up top, it looks like a mini scope, on a mini blaster.!

Laser dot is adjustable, and makes aiming easier.
Just get it pointing in the right direction…

I see your point…
see what I did there?

It was a bright idea…

Only because i couldn’t focus…

Didn’t wanna take a stab in the dark…

Dot the i’s , and cross the T’s…

No charge for this one… it has batteries…

You wont need rose coloured glasses…

Careful… when you go down the corny joke path, forever it will dominate your destiny…!!
