Offshoot RC Models/Drone Hobby Thread

Pushing on through the next few builds to get my RC Speedboats to survive the Modifications that I’m hammering into them! :joy:

I’m loving the fact that the UDIRC boats allow you to “split” the product, the same as pulling apart Gelbaster bodies and Gearboxes to do shit that shouldn’t be done!

Got plenty of modifications planned, and am taking into account COG and multiple other mechanical/physics calculations into effect.

Basically remove all of these parts and castings that are in my way to achieve the modifications that I’m looking to achieve.

Looking to mount the ESC, Reciever in the original Battery position, Epoxy the new Motor Mount much closer to the Stern, and then calculate and use the centre of the Hull to install the batteries to be able to play with CG fore and aft, along with getting the associated weight down as low as possible within the Hull. :ok_hand:

Just loving the fact that these particular models are designed pretty much the same as Gelblasters, in the sense that they are designed to be able to “split” the components to be able to work on them, not one piece moulded products that are impossible to work on. :ok_hand::clap::tada:

Once a modder, always a modder.

What was it Rebel said in that classic Aussie car movie “Running On Empty”?

“I don’t need eyes, Mike… it’s in the fingers.”

That’s 100% true mate, and loving the Running On Empty reference, as this is what I’ve been telling people my whole life who have watched me working on vehicles in areas that you can’t even see!

Being as blind as a bat doesn’t help either, having to throw the Glasses on top of the toolbox and just “work by braille” 90% of the time.

My kids absolutely LOVE that movie, having watched it hundreds of times, even used to wake up in the mornings and the kids would already have it in the old VHS Recorder and cranking through the Stereo. :sunglasses:
“I got Motor Magic” !

Yeah, iconic old Aussie car flick… some great Fords and Holdens in it, for sure.

Whenever my mates and I were on road trips we always used to quote the spotto line…

Spotto… a Chev… a blown '57 two door.

My favourite is when somebody is concentrating hard working on something or trying to achieve some difficult task, where I always blurt out…

“Don’t burn the Snatch Kev”. :joy:

The last Speedboat FINALLY turned up today, after having to contact the seller when after waiting since the beginning of April for the original Delivery Date in June…it never showed up. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

All good in the end though, as the seller was straight onto it as soon as I contacted them and express delivered this straight away, also throwing in an extra battery for my troubles. :sunglasses:

I got to learn a LOT of patience regarding overseas parts delivery with my time in the Gelbaster Hobby, where it wasn’t unusual to wait anywhere from 1 to 4 months for parts orders to get delivered!

In typical Docs Mods fashion, tore into it with the cordless tools straight away, removing the stock battery locking Post and other moulded posts that wouldn’t allow me to run my larger sized 2200mAh 3S batteries over the stock 1200mAh 3S units…,…for now  as already have 4S batteries that were ordered to squeeze into this little puppy for future performance upgrades.

Now you see them…

Now ya don’t!

Apply my standard high strength Velcro and Voilà, can fit whatever is required and move shit around to adjust the weight and balance in the Hull for the best handling characteristics. :ok_hand:

Has a tiny 30A ESC and pissy little Motor, so that’s the next on the “to do” list to replace with MOAR POWER!

Have already done plenty of research on the mods that the Mad Asian Race Club members do to get these things absolutely ripping, so plenty more fun to be had yet! :raised_hands:

Must admit that the stock 25-30kph speed is a little timid after running all the other Speedboats, but it’s still great fun, unpredictable as hell just like the Mad Flow Tunnel Hull, but at much slower speeds and less resultant carnage. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

The not so obvious issue here is the much smaller size of this model…

…and resultant lack of workspace for upgrading the internals, especially when you put it alongside the Mad Flow, it becomes obvious pretty quickly that there aint much room for go-fast gear.

Mate, dunno how I failed to mention this, but I’m great mates with the bloke who built and provided all the Cars for this Movie! :astonished:

He now lives here in WA and has told me so much about the makings of this movie and all the vehicles that were in it.

He’s still got the original number plates off that 57 Chev attached to the Bar in his shed, and has since built a similar 2 Door 57 in the same fashion, but in a different paint scheme.

The “Fox” Dodge is also here in WA and I have seen it many times, still looking exactly the same as it did in the Movie.

Interesting little facts I’ve learnt from my mate, like the “Gazzard Boys” Red EK HOLDEN that gets rolled in the movie is actually an FB HOLDEN that they fitted it with an EK Grille/bonnet etc, as those were the cheaper parts available from the wreckers at the time!

If you know how to pick the difference between these models, I highly recommend going back and watching the movie again, as I did, to spot the difference that I had NEVER realised prior to him telling me that story!

Another trippy fact is that my mate and the other mechanics who made the cars for the movie had a FAT old time when the movie was eventually finished and released in Cinemas long after the filming had finished.

They would all roll up at every single Drive-In Theatre in the Eastern States with the Fox Dodge, 57 Chev and the “Rammer” for each Debut Showing of the Film.

He said it was PRICELESS with him and his mates all parked up watching the Movie in amongst the the rest of the crowd, then seeing people’s reactions to realising that the vehicles they were seeing on the big screen in front of them were ACTUALLY parked right alongside them! :joy:

He said every single showing that they attended ended up in them rarely ever getting home those nights, as many conversations were had, and many beers were available out the back of many different car boots to keep the interactions “flowing”.

I’ve seen hundreds of old Polaroids that he’s kept in quite a few Photo Albums documenting the builds of every one of the vehicle’s seen in the movie, right down to the old Farm Truck that the Flaming XY launched off from into the creek…one of many XW/XY’s that they had to build for the Movie when you consider how much drama that Car Character went through!

There’s also a lot that I’ve probably forgotten too, as staying weekends at his shed talking about these old times usually equates to too many beers, not enough sleep and too many hangovers to remember half the shit we had talked about the night before.

Sounds like a hoot… great to hear about that off- camera action too. :+1:

I thought one of Max Cullen’s best lines in that movie was when Mike rolled back to Rebel’s with the burnt out and trashed XY…

Hey! Sounds like she’s got a wobble in the bottom end…

Ya think?

Na they won’t be coming untill December when It’ll rain heavy. Thanks for trying to send it over but40mm won’t cut it.

Fkn hell thought you quick down the quarter sink that bloody slipper in to it a bit harder pretty please.

And no I can’t afford beer for 6 months. I’d ring ya now but your problaby inbed.

Cheers mate, yeah was definitely a late night :face_exhaling: Hope you going orright and keeping ya head below the Parapet!

Oh yeah, another favourite line that I use in every situation possible! :joy:

Oh man… there’s a heap of retailers who probably want to shoot me right now, but when their online ordering systems keep wigging out, what else are you meant to do?

Working on very specific measurements on many different small parts to get everything to eventually fit together for the mods that I have planned for all these different custom builds.

Problem is that even though you select the specific parts in the list available when purchasing those products, it’s not until AFTER the payment has gone through that the glitches appear in their online ordering systems where the parts that you ordered come back as a completely different sized product on the order confirmation receipt. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Gotta check the details after EVERY single purchase to ensure that the items you select at the checkout actually match the the items that have been verified in the order. :face_exhaling:

Have ordered and immediately "refunded about 7 items in the last 12 hours, then having to find other suppliers where their product selection at the checkout actually matches the items that you have selected.

Plenty of stuff on order on its way, and hopefully everything has been sorted and corrected to receive the PROPER parts that I have paid for!

Forgot to mention…

Had this in the shopping cart for ages with an EXTREMELY good price locked in.

I’m getting it for basically half the price advertised anywhere else and the retailer was down to less than a handful in stock, so would be mad to not have purchased it.

1100mm model with all the fruit for almost $100 less than the crappy 800mm version that has absolutely no extras or features whatsoever!

Class example of cancelling orders.
Had this in my shopping cart for a while to fit into the TYLOSAURUS.

Simple custom motor mount to get the job done for $25. :+1:

But after finally hitting the “Buy Now” button, these setups suddenly appeared in the screen underneath them!

Fully set up frame rigs with EVERYTHING that could ever wish for In a custom build for $14 !

I hit that “cancel order” button in lightning speed on the original single motor mount purchase straight away!

Full length adjustable motor mounts, drive tube mounts and steering Servo/ battery mounts all in one piece for $10 cheaper! :flushed:
(Just the framework obviously, illustration for final assembly using your own parts.)
Certainly pays to shop around and do your research.:ok_hand:

The only mods I’ll have to do is drill out that standard 7mm driveshaft mount to suit my custom 9mm OD driveshaft with all the 8mm ID upgraded internal goodies and Robert’s ya Father’s Brother!

Must be a Ford

Was doing some more stupid mods with the little Orange 915 Tunnel Hull yesterday, as not overly impressed with the stock speed, even though pretty quick for such a small model Speedboat, those mad Asian modifiers definitely have shown how fast you can actually make them!

Fitted a Stainless 40mm Prop in place of the stock 32mm plastic version, and that definitely woke it up almost doubling the speed. :ok_hand:

Had charged a small 4S battery that I can squeeze in there, but left the battery plug adaptor at home, so didn’t get to give it a whirl. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

There’s a 90% chance that it will let the LUCAS smoke out of the tiny little 30A ESC, but hey, don’t know if you don’t try!

Bugger. I reckon slap a big block chev in it. More power Doctor  :+1:

That will get the fker up on the plane

PS the Piper is on the slow boat from China. So expect a crash soon and we can compare notes

Take care mate :+1:

Crashing is ALWAYS the quickest and most effective way of getting any Aircraft back to mother earth! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Especially if I talk to that Danish pilot, flaps 5, Houston we are going down  :+1:

Be a busy day in the cockpit that day
