A place for Gelblaster enthusiasts who have related side interests in the the various other Hobbies closely related to our Gelbaster passion.
Y’all have too many expensive hobbies bruh.
I’ll start this off by saying that I have had to find another hobby to keep my brain and hands busy since the banning of Gelblasters in Western Australia.
Gelblasters took my love of Mechanics, Physics and Electronics to be able to apply to a hobby and having the satisfaction of seeing the results of my own handiwork.
I personally hit two brick walls at once.
The banning of Gelblasters and my physical impairments forcing me to close my business and retire from the workforce.
I wandered around aimlessly looking for something to fill the void of being so heavily involved with Gelbasters for so many years, and to have it suddenly taken away, I instead got my old 1988 GQ Patrol and focused my time, attention and money into rebuilding that instead.
But being a custom Hot Rod/Classic/Muscle Car builder for nearly 40 years, modifying and customising the old Patrol was just another day in the office and didn’t scratch that itch of achieving something different.
The Xmas just gone I got my mentally disabled Son a RC 70 Series LandCruiser, and his excitement and enjoyment was beyond words, even to the point where my ex-missus was texting me weeks later saying that she couldn’t believe that he was playing with it nonstop ever since!
I’ve since found some upgraded parts that I can go spend time with him fitting to the electronics, and hopefully be able to spend even more time with him modifying it with even more aftermarket parts to make him happy.
This is where I had my lightbulb moment that I was looking for something to fill the void of the Gelbaster hobby, then realising that I spent my entire teenage years in the 1980’s deeply involved in building/modifying and racing/competing with RC Cars, Buggies, Aircraft and Boats with great success.
So that’s where I’m at right now, reviving old memories and talents into the RC Industry.
I’ve already had MANY conversations with @Maiphut on this topic, and is why I’ve created this offshoot thread for others to share their knowledge and experience with these different hobbies that many Gelbaster owners are also interested in.
I won’t post any of my crap at the moment, but am waiting for other Forum members to kick off sharing whatever they have as a side hobby alongside the Gelbaster scene.
Cheers for putting up with my ramblings, but keen to see where this thread ends up!
Fire away and all the best,
Bob.
Nah mate, same as I tackled the Gelbaster hobby…get the cheapest lowest performance crap and spend very little money, but a lot of time applying my skills figuring out how to get the ultimate performance for the lowest price possible!
I don’t have any functional Gelbasters anymore, don’t have any Drones, Gaming Consoles, a television, a radio, a computer, a house , a drug or gambling habit, no “ladies of the night” or ANYTHING other than a love affair with an old NISSAN Patrol and boxes of Bush Chooks!
I’ve gone from earning $110 an hour for decades to living life $300 per week and loving it!
So definitely not playing a rich mans game at all!
I like your style, Doc
I did try drones but I got tired of not finding decent open areas to fly it in. So I moved into the hobby of Virtual Reality instead.
You want expensive? jump into 3d printing, about to drop 2k on 2 new 3d printers, one with a multi material system and one thats just plain bigger then i currently have. Plus the plastic for it to even make anything can start at 20 per kg and just go up from there.
Also a easy way to get yourself in some trouble without making gelblaster parts
Done 3d printing, done vr, done pc gaming, done console gaming. Is there anything that isn’t good?
Nice one Doc.
One of the many reasons to go country years ago was to have space to enjoy my hobbies to their fullest.
I’ll add to this later on when I get time with some of the current stable. Depends how many Gigabyte this server can hold
Thanks to Doc I decided to get a trail truck I’ve sorta been wanting for a few years, so that’ll be coming soon. Cheap too.
RC cars, planes and trains.
Tried RC cars too… That didn’t last long either.
I’d love an RC version of the predator drone but I would think that be bad haha.
Next best would be a RC F35
I’m lucky to have 3 or 4 mates who are heavily invested in their 3D Printing set ups and able to get little projects done through the beer economy if needed
Biggest thing for me is that I’m computer illiterate and am able to watch and learn a few parts of the process, but most of its still left handed Swahili to me!
Hopefully ya new truck rolls up @Maiphut and can’t wait to see the build, as will be something different from the stuff we used to blow our pocket money on back in the 80’s, and crawler/trail trucks are a different breed to the lighting fast racing buggies that we’re used to operating!
Honestly i just keep the bloody things for keeping stuff orginised around my other hobbys like my photography/videography, drones and the like. Tho this winter im printing a pretty big project that is going to be interesting. Giant scaled up pc fan from a guy called makers muse on youtube
Some of the 3d prints ive done
Need a phone adaptor for your spotting scope while doing archery? Just print one.
Landing pad for a drone? few hours and you have a plastic one that you can make in any color you like.
I love my sd card cases tho, know at just a glance what one contains what sd cards, need to redo the osmo 3 lid tho at some point since im going the newer version and i need to do the filled cards for the raw file format sd cards.
Some parts are arriving, not the cruiser yet
Eyeing this off 1:12 Mn82 5 Post Bullbar And Brush Bar COMBO | eBay
That seller has other printed parts for these.
I have a non racing drone that I am looking to clear out of my possession.
Does it have camera/video etc?
Been thinking about getting one for my 4WDriving/Camping/Touring expeditions.
Handy for spotting tracks, rivers, sand dunes and scoping out spots to camp from the air when in the middle of nowhere.
Yeah I’m getting the runaround at the moment with my eBay seller with a couple of the Vehicles being marked as “delivered”, yet they definitely haven’t!
Contacted the seller as per eBay dispute guidelines and received a response, so will keep following up and see what happens.
It’s happened a few times before where get eBay notification of parcels being “delivered”, but they had just reached Australia and then the emails changed from “delivered” to “in transit” as they were passed from the international shipping tracking number to AusPost/Local Couriers.
Currently a few that were marked “delivered” are actually sitting in a place called Wantirna South, which I’m hoping is a AusPost or Courier Sorting Centre.
Certainly a pain in the arse trying to keep track of all the different tracking/shipping/item/order/delivery numbers and emails.
Cheers mate
“No obstacle avoidance”…
Does that mean I need to get @BME to give me some flying lessons
Yes cos I am a terrible pilot and crashed it while doing a rooftop inspection video when my mum was selling her place. It was still usable.
Edit: here’s a play list of videos from the drone. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjukS9Q50PXp40BHYdBZASgt-UcnCCHK6&si=G4rjh28HAO-_650M
Poor old “new” Hilux is copping the same treatment as most of my Blasters, torn apart and gutted brand new out of the box before I even drove it outside
Lots of mods happening, and much like aftermarket Gelblaster parts, many mods and fine tuning to do on brand new accessories to get them to fit/work as required
Axles needing lubrication, retaining compound on the pinion bearings and shimming the pinion/crown wheel for the correct mesh… which is where all my leftover Gelblaster shim kits are coming VERY handy
Currently removing the Radio gear/electronics, the portal axles I just fitted but haven’t driven it with for the CNC Alloy/steel units, different metal driveshafts, full Alloy/steel 2 speed gearbox and 4600KV waterproof Brushless motor and ESC etc for a bit more giddyup!
Have a few different 2 speed Gearboxes, but this Alloy/steel version gives the most ground clearance and lowest profile for less chopping floor pans for the servo/actuating rod clearance compared to the massive black WPL 2 speed gearbox … which I immediately replaced the stock 260 motor will a 31 turn high torque 370 motor
As I said to @Maiphut …imma gonna have to find my Red Towel* TM again!
