Iāve been trading blows in the you tube comments about the xm7 - xm8 in 6.8 x51 & ADF putting itās nose in the trough.

Itās just another opportunity for the USA/NATO to keep changing the goalposts by some overpaid pencil pushers somewhere to create a money making exercise to sell more weapons and ammunition to as many countries as possible.
7.62, 5.56, 6.8 ā¦ once theyāve collected billions of dollars worth of sales on equipment from as many countries as possible, give it another few years and theyāll make all that redundant AGAIN by coming out with yet ANOTHER sales pitch to change to something else totally random like 4.95!
Marine Corp has rejected 6.8 as primary weapon system and is sticking with 5.56 JASOC is trialing a new high pressure 5.56 that nearly equals 6.8 performance at lower cost. This will maintain M4 based weapon systems and maintain compatibility with allies. Only cost is lower barrel life.
Theyāll most likely triple the price of replacement 5.56 barrels if they canāt sell/market the 6.8 to anyone!

My personal opinion, thinks the idea stinks.
Obviously, short barrelled M4 type platforms suffer & need a boost.
We are ahead of the curve, using the EF88 & itās longer barrel.
Iām not a big fan of 7.62 & think 5.56 from short barrels is fairly retarded.
The far easier ( imo ) solution is the 6mm Max cartridge. Beats the 6 arc in every way & still maintains the same magazine capacity as 5.56.
Retooling is the cheapest opinion, belt links are still the same .
Is a genuine 1000 meter + cartridge & stays supersonic past 1000m.
& it can also take the higher pressure route if needed.
6.8 doesnāt get enough juice from the squeeze.
Just my 2 cents.
That barrel cost is pretty dam significant.
Automatic fire REALLY cooks barrels, let alone adding extra heat, velocity, pressure & harder bullet jackets.
It also requires strongers bolts & gas systems.
Thereās no free lunch going this route.
Best Free lunch is maintaining barrel length the cartridge was designed for , adding weight better, bore ratio & higher ballistic coefficient bullets.
5.56mm and short barrel M4ās donāt work at all. Loose down to around 2500fps sort of and we full punch 3300fps makes 5.556mm more effective. So I aggree from experience. All you need for vermin control at 20" + to get full fps. USA having trouble with that at extended ranges Afghanistahn as we were not longer brl. Physics pretty simple.
7.62mm better for mounted put 2 of them on top of M113 makes for very bad day downrange
