Its dangerous, ban it…meanwhile crims continue to use weapons which are readily available.
If Mr druggie chainsaw guy was busting at my front gate, and wanting to come in, i think that would be appropriate justification for use of private firearms, for self defense, in a life or death situation.
I don’t there would be a jury around, that would convict you…

So technically bollard man from the Bondi knife attack last year did something illegal…using a bollard as a weapon.
When i spoke to the police later, they said they look at things on a case by case basis…
i.e. for my “hypothetical speeding”, it would be excused as i had just cause…distancing myself from a perpetrator threatening violence.
In the case of bollard man, he was using reasonable force, to disarm a person armed with a knife.
Would a bollard stand against a chainsaw…?
Most likely not…hence use of a private firearm could be justified, in that hypothetical situation.
Its up to the police to review the case, decide whom they are going to go after, if anyone at all, and then press charges…
One could attempt to apply the same reasoning to pepper spray. You’re attempting to stop a perp after all.
