WOW, what a shitshow!
This definitely isn’t an isolated case when it comes to these “training” Companies and is the reason behind so many incidents involving trucks on the roads these days.
It goes far beyond what we see on the roads, it also has deep implications on the “unwritten truckies code” of how to operate together to keep the industry safe for everyone.
There’s so many unwritten “rules” when it comes to operating large trucks in this country, and NONE of this is known or taught by these fly by night “Training” companies, while is impacting the industry all across the roads of Australia.
These are tied into proper 2 way radio communication, safe speed and manoeuvring between different vehicles and even down to parking/refuelling and rest stop etiquette… but NONE of these drivers have a single clue and simply belt around the place causing havoc everywhere they go.
I had a bloody hard time finding a Company where I could upgrade my License too mate, finding only ONE in the whole Perth/Southwest region that were able to provide the necessary training and equipment to upgrade my License.
This was a single Company in Bunbury, about 200km south of Perth, and even then they told me it was going to cost around $3000 as they would have to subcontract the required Instructor/Assessor AND a Truck/Trailer Combination to be able to complete the requirements!
There’s hundreds of places available like you said @Maiphut that offer “Truck Driver Training”, but they are exactly as you described… short computer course/driver assessment and BINGO, off you trot down the highway with your huge mobile block of flats and hope you don’t kill TOO many people.
All these companies provide is Automatic Gearbox Licenses, as that’s what the majority of suburban/modern Fleets are running and the immigrants can easily pass the tests, so that’s why I couldn’t find anyone to help me with my current Open Class Manual Licence requirements, they don’t have any knowledge or experience/equipment on how to teach people 18 Speed Road Ranger or Allanson Manual Gearbox operation.
This is why this company in Bunbury has to hire a Trainer and a Manual Gearbox Prime Mover to be able to do my assessment, as they are exactly the same as these other Training Centres, but are the only ones willing to go that extra step to fullfill my requirements…at a much higher cost!
Unfortunately it’s all out the window now, as the declining health certainly won’t allow me to get back into driving Trucks anymore, even though I already completed my Driver’s Medical, Police Clearance and Working with Children Card to cover any Tourist Coach/Bus Driving type Jobs if required.
There’s hundreds of businesses screaming out for experienced Open Class Manual Drivers out there, obviously sick of all these “WEETBIX” Automatic Only Steering Wheel Attendants they are stuck with … which is why my mates were going to pay for my Licence Upgrade and to get me to come work for them with these Quad Side Tippers, but I couldn’t accept the offer knowing that my physical impairments would let them down.
