Locally, other farmers grow a heap of Canola. That get’s refined in to biodiesel I read somewhere and got told as I’ve done part time work for some.
I don’t follow it as my land can’t support it. I don’t know much about it besides the big failures they’ve had in growing it last 2 years locally due to frosts and drought killing it.
Rye goes good out here, cross between wheat and triticale. Have to adhere to biosecurity as it ends up being made in to human consumption bread at the states mill after I’ve paid freight to get it there.
I do courses and accreditation so I don’t make people sick. Costs a fair bit but after a lot of hard yakka the end result I get a smile and some pride even if I only cover costs when things are bad. Then sometimes things go really bad

Funny how Deere John sell a $750,000 aud dollar tractor new off the showroom floor with a DEF delete on it to around here and no one bats an eye lid. Can’t have it, it’s hardly available as it’s 50% Urea along with distilled water which is our fertilizer that we can’t get to fertilize the crops to make them grow. Over $1300 aud/t last I looked, unavailable, and I’m not cropping this year, weather is too unstable, I can’t afford it and the list goes on. Too risky. Focus on the sheep.
Trouble I see at the moment. State gov earlier this year offered us low interest loan, 2.5% for first 2 years, then 4.5% for up to $40k and must be paid off in 10 years. I declined as the weather is bit unpredictable and I couldn’t see myself achieving that goal. I likely would but it’s too risky for me. I know 5 times bigger farmers that have done it, got the fertilizer secured to crop, need right now to do paddock preparation, working up and plant stock feed etc after the rain we just had. No fuel, can’t even start the tractor so they are fucked.
The old school got to be in by the end of May to have any success with crops of all types. Timing is crucial to grow food. As this is the first rain since 2025, go time was a week ago.
Yea good luck finding a wife with any petrol… that’s your job now or a car for that matter.
