Voting to permanently amend the constitution, for vague parameters, that haven’t been fully defined.?.?

Thats a No, from me.

And no, im not racist, all for helping/ encouraging aboriginals to get ahead.

They already get additional help, when they choose to study, via abstudy, and other govt grants available, if they go to uni…

the whole premise of their argument is predicated on them not having any representation. that’s a lie.

the aboriginal population is 3.2%, they have 11% of the senate, and 2% of the lower house. that seems very proportionally represented to me.

the yes camp is literally guilt tripping the public in jumping into the deep end.

when your own PM calls you a racist for voting no, you know that’s not acceptable.

Had exactly that conversation, with a Capt from work…
If facts and logic aren’t on your side…just use emotion…

Reeks of a power grab, with the capacity to have phenomenal cost blowout down the track…

Hypothetical Question: If we could wave a magic wand, remove all trace of white mans presence over the last 200 odd years, and restore the country back to how it was, centuries ago… is that what aboriginals really want…??

If the answer is no, then what…??
Please don’t say, its simply just more money…

I can say the vast majority seem to be content not progressing in life and achieving anything. Living off cenno using programs like deadly choices and abusing the free education and opportunities that we hand to them on a silver plater.

I just think this is another one or theses things where we are forced to feel sorry for things someones ancestors did and give out more free things and opportunities.

It is nice to see abbo families do something with their lives, having great families and all n they are like the most humble and kind people i have ever met. Yet the people that do benefit from theses are disgusting people that want to punch on woth randos at the train station becuase theres just nothing else they can achieve

chapter 9 will be constitutional white guilt.

Wow.
Succinct, and articulate response…

I agree, we are not guilty for shouldering the sins of our ancestors.
Had the Poms not colonized Australia, another race surely would have, and the aboriginal population could have suffered a much harsher fate.

Any person with a sense of morality would say they are owed an apology, for the stolen generation, and when one was sincerely given, most of Australia supported it. As stated, we are not responsible for what ancestors did , generations ago.

Fast forward to now, aboriginals are given a large number of choices and opportunities. If they wanna live traditionally, on a reserve, they are free to do so. Want to study, apply yourself, and get ahead in life…support for that as well. When i went through Uni, there was a proud aboriginal guy in our course, no chip on his shoulder, worked as hard as every one else, and deserved his success.

Unfortunately, a large number choose to live at the other end of the spectrum, darwin overnights show the poor life choices they choose to make, when they have other options open to them.

I dont know what would motivate them, to choose differently…

Australia is a very multicultural country, the average person is not racist, and we tend to be very accepting of others, as long as they are mutually respectful, and show good character…

Huh? They have been properly defined. I’ve read the exact changes they intend to make.

The amendment is two changes only, adding the following.

Creating the elder council.
Allowing them to create laws based on the Voice recommendations.

They’re creating the council, as regional aboriginal groups aren’t properly represented by our normal democratic means. This is because the aboriginals who still live somewhat traditionally aren’t represented. They tend to move around a lot, and don’t have proper districts as a result. So now all the nomadic groups can present ideas to parliament to be discussed. After they recommend the idea, it goes back to normal law making. Parliament discusses and votes on it etc etc.

The second change is because the government can ONLY make laws about things the constitution SPECIFICALLY outlines. This adds recommendations from the Voice to the list of things that they may make laws about. The wording is no more vague than any other permitted reason that already exists (I’ve read the constitution too, especially that part.)

Honestly, the Yes campaign could have been a lot clearer, and I wish that people voting Yes would stop calling no voters racist. NOBODY is immune to propaganda, and the No campaign has done a fantastic job of sewing fear and doubt over an unambiguously good thing. Shame on that fuckwit Dutton for trying to scare everyone, if anything. It’s not the voters fault that he’s blasting everyone with bs.

Canada did something similar and it has seen their spending on indigenous affairs go up without any improvement.

the no voters aren’t against reconciliation, just how albo intends to implement it. the yes camp really dug their own hole by dodging questions and calling those that question them racists.

if i am going to vote on something, i better know what it entails in detail.

I think you might be misinformed? Canada does not have a constitutional voice.

From the Australian parliament website.

There are no extra details, because the change is simple.

It creates the voice.
It allows parliament to engage in the normal law making process, based on voice recommendations.

That is literally it.

and yet when asked, the yes camp keeps dodging and weaving and just call the no camp racists. you’re not gonna win people over to your case if you go that low.

they have a big hill to climb and they have themselves to blame.

I’m in the yes camp.

I’m not dodging anything, and I don’t think you’re a racist. I think that you’ve just been taken in by the intentional campaign to sew fear and doubt. Which…again, nobody is immune to that. Not even me. The only racist here is Mr. Penishead himself, Dutton.

I’m just going to tell you the truth of it.

The FULL composition of the ammendment is just this:

Clause iii is necessary because Chapter 2, Part V, Section 52 of the constitution specifically outlines when Parliament is allowed to make laws.

The language is extremely specific about which sources Parliament is able to legislate laws from. This is the same reason why change.org petitions do nothing, and you HAVE to make petitions on the Parliament website. They are constitutionally forbidden from using any petitions from non-official sources.
