Brisbane will never get hit with a cat 5 cyclone…coriolis force defeats them as they go further south…
But, this doesn’t stop the media from blowing it out of proportion, and driving panic buying…
Water bottles for $89…seriously…it falls for free from the sky…
Sensible preparation is the order of the day, and deal with the outcomes as they come…
Were used to severe flash storms in summer…this is a 2 day storm… yet most people dont do the same amount of prep, for storm season…nor feel the same amount of panic…
IN HK when the typhoon was at Cat 2 we’d all head down to Repulse Bay for a picnic and the other crazy Oztralians would get their boards out and surf the swell. Only head indoors about 6 hours before it hit
Hmmmm, dunno about that… the weather patterns have changed so much I wouldn’t say with 100% certainty that it’s impossible… unlikey? Yeah…impossible? Not necessarily.
The coriolis effect only dictates direction of rotation… clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere, counter-clockwise in the northern. Speed of rotation and wind velocity depends on the barometric pressure in the eye… the lower it is, the faster the wind speeds.
The warmer ocean temperatures nearer to the equator are what’s conducive to cyclones… that’s why they mostly occur in Northern Australia and are more frequent, stronger and occur at more southerly lattitudes in a La Niña year… warmer ocean temperatures further south.
And with global warming and shifting ocean currents, nothing’s off the table weatherwise.
interesting youtube video, explaining coriolis effect, and why it causes rotational flow.
Coriolis force is different at different latitudes , increasing as you head towards the poles.
Thats why air tends to flow directly across isobars, at the equator, and parrallel to isobars further south.
The hot ocean temperature feeds the energy into the rising , low pressure air mass. Which is why they are a summer event, not winter…
The power only gets knocked out because last time it was checked, yea 1975 . Kinda when I was born. Well that’s the answer I get when I have to go fuel power.
Been told to stay home and just answer emails and phones for the next few days, physically being on sites for work has been deemed “too risky”.
My work for the water network gets busy after storms for a few weeks so I expect the couple of days off to be redeemed in force after the “event”.
I find it amusing, as right now in my part of Sunshine Coast, I am looking at a sun in a section of blue sky with clouds around, no rain yet, and mild wind. So many businesses have closed for today and tomorrow already though!
My old boss would have had me working through! Glad I moved on!
Looks like a fizzer - already down to Cat 1 and likely to be tropical low when it hits the coast. The wildlife knew it was a dud as none of the local birdlife has left, Butcher birds still tapping on the kitchen window wanting their breakfast
Helped a mate excavate his chariot out of my other mates shed that I’m house sitting for.
Mate who’s in QLD at the moment had buried his mates bike deep in the corner of his shed before he left, piling heaps of heavy steel benches and toolboxes/equipment all around it for extra security.
Now his mate has just returned from Melbourne and wanting to go for a ride, just spent quite a while digging our way through to be able to finally get it out for him.
Speaking of NANNY States, I wonder how he ever managed to get these number plates, and how often the Police pull him over for a little “chat”.
