Unfortunately it’s not a new system lol
I do it every time they give me a new ute, this is my fourth new ute with the company, and my sixth ute in total.
And they still try it, I’m always calling people out for trying to steal my shit

First run chasing ducks at the local Weir today with the new Speedboat
Dunno if this is a good result from a brand new battery being balance charged straight outta the box then used for its very first run?
It’s matching twin battery I got with it didn’t fair any better
Could only get a one minute run time, come to shore, pull it out to cool off, then do the same another 3 times until the LVC cut into the fun after only about 4 minutes total run time on the water.
Motor and ESC not even warm and yet both of these batteries couldn’t last a single minute of use without cooking themselves
Will try out the 4 other OVONICS 2S and 3S pairs that I have, and can only hope they aren’t the same.
Needless to say that I’ll be sending these pics and an Angry Face email to the Australian Hobby Shop Seller and see if I can get a refund.
But hey, at least my boat didn’t burn to the waterline!
The supplied boat battery and one of my old TURNIGY 3S bricks had no issues whatsoever running flat chat for around 7-10 minutes
And YES, that’s my Kayak in the back of the Patrol… can never be too careful when throwing a brand new boat into the water for its maiden voyage!
Sound like you got both lucky and unlucky, Doc…
You could easily have lost that boat.
Hope you get some satisfaction from the seller, matey.
You realise…
Some boaties try to burn their boats down, for insurance money…!!
Cheers mate
Yeah I would have been REALLY pissed if my boat burnt down on its very first voyage
Dunno how I’d go about claiming compensation for it all from the Battery supplier.
They are so weak that even when the LVC warning cut in, still couldn’t get it to even do “limp home mode”!
Had to gradually get it back to shore by waiting a few minutes between throttle inputs just to get the battery to periodically recover enough to spin the prop and active the rudder for a couple of seconds at a time
No such issues with the standard or TURNIGY batteries after hitting LVC mode!
I can see why they provide you with a free fibreglass fireproof LiPo bag when you buy these batteries!
Have emptied out the bag and only putting those 2 OVONICS batteries in it, as don’t want something happening on the way home and losing my other batteries and tools along with them.
Its a Mnemonic…
OVONIC
Overcharged,
Voltage runaway,
Overtemped,
Now
i
Combust…!!
At least you have the bag for it…!!
I’m just charging the other OVONICS now so I can hopefully get back down the Weir this afternoon to test them out.
If they behave the same as the others, then I’ll be looking to send all 6 back at the same time!
I was being kind and doing a slow Balance Charge… but just went in and threw them on FAST charge, 'cause I don’t really care about these brand new batteries anymore and doubt whether I’ll ever be getting any prolonged use out of them anyrate.
Just re-reading this post, and gotta say that it’s not the Magpies to worry about around here… pedalling back I had to emergency brake and swerve 3 times from the mad Kangaroos running out in front of me!
Not to mention the many others scaring the crap out of me from suddenly crashing through the scrub as I peddled on past!
Make sure your push bike insurance is paid up…
If you hit a roo, get his details, then get in touch with his lawyer for damages….
Plenty of bush lawyers around, I’m sure he’s got representation…!!
That’s crazy and very lucky.
See how those 5200 50c go, might be better higher discharge rating. Oh they are only 2S. Hook em up in series
Depends how the low voltage works too, does it physically cut the power/reduce it to snails pace. As I understand those boats require some serious amperage.
Speaking of which HobbyKing just sent me an email they are having sales on their Lipo batteries. Looks like some decent prices there from the AUS warehouse.
Still out the Weir with limited phone reception, so will update when I get back
But yeah, running in series was the whole reason for getting those 2S hard case batteries.
Unfortunately this latest test of the 2200mAh 3S 35C batteries is just as bad as my last post regarding their 4S batteries
Bad enough performance for land/water based models, where at least I made sure to be on the downwind bank of Weir if anything went wrong… but you don’t have that safety margin with Airplanes/Helicopters or Drones!
DO NOT EVER run OVONIC batteries in ANYTHING that defies gravity!
Holy crap, that is shocking. Definitely be on to the retailer about them.
Had a quick look at that exact boats ESC and it claims “Built-in low-voltage detection for batteries. Thermal overload protection. Voltage overload protection. Locked rotor protection. Throttle Neutral Setting protection.”
Detection is ok, cut off be nicer, depends how long you run it after. Likely not cut off being a boat you gotta get to shore somehow. If it detects low voltage at only 3.0v per cell and you run it further they will be damaged. Did you check the puffed ones voltage just to see?
So being that besides what else I can see about the ESC 100amp it should have your batteries covered… unless the batteries are faulty is the only other excuse.
I haven’t tried OVONIC before(and won’t be), just stuck with Turnigy as they have worked 15+ years for me, only failing when I wreck and damage the battery have I had puffing and hydrogen fizzes.
Cheers mate, yeah I’m a diehard TURNIGY fanboy myself
Mighten have the highest “output” ratings on the bullshit market, but by Christ they are strong and indestructible!
The TYLOSAURUS RX/TX are awesome units, with both LVC and Range audible warnings built into the receiver.
The LVC works a treat on both the original and TURNIGY batteries, giving an Audible warning and then going into “limp home mode” at a safe 3.4V “under load” per cell to keep the RX/Steering Servo/Motor active long enough to get back to shore “unloaded” no matter how far out on the water you may be and not drop below 3.3V per cell .
These boats have awesome features as you listed above and work EXTREMELY well with decent quality batteries.
NO issues whatsoever with the standard battery or any of my other quality old school Gelbaster brick batteries.
Thermally protected, LVC, Range warnings along with low TX/RX warnings make for an absolutely awesome setup to use.
The problem with these shit house OVONICS batteries is that by the time the LVC cuts in, they absolutely ZERO reserve capacity due to horrific voltage sag and terrible voltage recovery ability.
LVC’s normally kicks in under full throttle/high load stresses of the battery, giving you plenty of extra voltage to land the Aircraft or limp home mode to make it back to base on the remaining battery power once unloaded.
These OVONICS just DIE on the spot, without any ability to even power a “limp home” mode.
I put my battery tester across all of the batteries that I used today.
The factory LVC is set at 3.4V, allowing that little extra power to get back safely without over discharging the battery.
The stock and aftermarket batteries I used still registered 3.4+ V per cell after getting back to shore… whereas those OVONIC pieces of shit sent the battery checker into red lights and sirens as soon as I plugged them in, seeing individual cell voltages of 3.18, 3.24, 3.29, 3.36 etc etc.
So yeah, great Boat with an awesome setup in regards to mechanical and electrical systems… just gotta make sure to feed it with quality power systems!
Was originally gonna chop the plugs on the OVONIC 2S batteries to fit EC5 Plugs and make up a few series/ parallel adaptors… but after seeing the “performance” of these bloody things, obviously not going to bother doing shite!
Going to save some coin and invest in some LIPERIOR batteries, as seem to be the best performance/reputation that’s available on the market, or failing that, some CNHL battery packs.
Yea fk em, just send em, back.
The specs on the ESC are great by your description so that isn’t the problem. 3.4v is very safe and great stuff.
Turnigy do make high output batteries these days. Along with their lower budget and everything in between lines.
Turnigy Rapid 6000mAh 4S (14.8V) 100C LiPo Battery Pack w/XT90 Connector | hobbyking
I’ve never ventured beyond Turnigy as they do what I want and don’t fail me. Actually I do have a few Zippys and they won’t die either, some of those are 10 years old and balance out nice. Plus they are locally available.
I wish you luck in trying out other brands. If was me I wouldn’t. oof just had a quick look they are about the price of your boat. They better contain gold
Finishing a customers blasters, originally went with 13:1 short 2 teeth, t238 brushless 25k and was nicely 300fps… sent him a video and he asked if it could be faster. Done! Changed to 28k brushless.
He wants more fps too, but 300 is plenty and keeps accuracy better, plus going to an m110 will risk the cast ldx I think… see what his decision is soon.
Yes that’s my YouTube’s… been slowly getting videos and quality of my editing better… fun though and it’s become another time consuming hobby!
Jeremiah Johnson on your thumbnail?
Nice, would like to try those T238 out one day for a rapid fire build when funds allow it.
In the meantime…
Charging everything up for another run now I have made a Series connector for the other batteries to be able to test out.
That 10AWG is like trying to solder winch cables!
Made some DEANS to XT60 plug adaptors while I was at it.
Next on the list will be some XT60/XT90 Series & Parrarel leads, but gotta get some 14AWG first to get it all to fit on the plug terminals.
