What Did You Get Up To Today?

So did I…

Cheers mate, much appreciated

Edit: it’s the lack of clear communication as to what exactly is going on because they’re collaborating with the PA there’s a bit of a break down in communication and some info is probably getting lost in transit, so to speak

Medinchina Laptop rubbish…

So, 2.5 yrs ago, i salary sacrificed a HP Omen Envy 16inch laptop.
$3000.00 worth… i figured getting a good brand laptop should last at least 5-7yrs.

It came with a 12 month warranty. I declined extended warranty.

All good, until 6 months ago.
Wifi card dropping out…had it replaced… $200.
Still drops out…but less often. i can live with that.

Today…black screen of death.
Turn it on, it starts up, just a black screen.
I tried the simple internet fixes, no good.

Back to the laptop shop…theyre pulling it apart.
If its a new screen…$500 replacement!!
If its the motherboard…throw it away…!!

Very unhappy, with a “premium” laptop, so i called Harvey Norman.
Apparently, laptop failures are quite common, regardless of brand or price.

All built on Medinchina garbage…nothing lasts…

Which is why they reccommend extended warranty.

I asked how much it costs…depends on value of the laptop.
For a $3000 laptop…$1200 !!

I laughed out loud when he said that…
I told him…
“That means, the companies KNOW it will fail, something WILL break, and they WILL have to do a warranty payout of some kind.!!”

Charging a premium, for worthless garbage…!!

Im typing this on my Japanese Toshiba P500 Sattelite…
Its around 2008 vintage, still works flawlessly, never missed a beat…

The laptop was only ever used, for basic browsing tasks…never gaming etc.

HN said…" get an extended warranty, next laptop you get"

I said…" If i need to get a new one, for basic purposes, i wont waste my money buying anything fancy…it’ll just fail. And, waste more money, buying a extended warranty, to cover their problems they created.

I’ll just get a $1000 laptop…if it lasts 2 yrs and plays up…out to 40 acre property, shoot the shit out of it, smash it, burn it and get my final moneys worth and fun from it…!! "

So, there you have it…

Japanese quality for the win…!!
Disgraceful that “top end” laptops, have absolutely no longevity…

Nothing’s built to last anymore.

If memory serves correct, HP got in trouble a few years back for building what could basically be described as a self destruct function into their printers where after a short period after the warranty was over, the printer started failing to print and just gave errors every time you attempted to print, forcing the user to take it in for costly repairs or requiring replacement.

All it came down to was a line of code programmed into the software, there was nothing physically wrong with the printer in most cases.

Pretty sure info on it is still available online

But yeah, when you pay extra for premium goods, you expect premium quality and for whatever the item is to last.

Everything just seems to be built to fail these days or just not go the distance, it’s quite pathetic

2.5 yrs for a $3000 laptop…what utter garbage…!!

HN said they’ve seen $5000 gaming laptops fail within 12 months…!!

That is an absolute joke, companies should face massive fine for releasing half asses products. Such consequences might actually make companies start making quality products again.

But then again, it’s like big pharma, there’s no money in cures, but there is in temporary measures that keep the customer coming back and back

They’re only concerned with profits, not with actual cures or quality products that are built to last, it’s shameful business practices to say the least

Planned obsolesence… been a thing in manufacturing since the 70’s.

Cars are a pretty good example of that. And that’ll only get worse with all the Medinchina cars flooding the market these days.

GWM… Great Wall Motors?

More like Great Waste of Money.

Purchased two HP laptops in 2010 just before HP made me redundant (they purchased our company and tried to run a consulting business like a printer business - sold it at huge loss a couple of years ago)

Both were great laptops and lasted 12 years - except for HDD failures. CPU eventually died because they ran too hot and cooked the dielectric paste,

Since thne I buy used government laptops for $300 and they have been performing great (16gb and 512TB SSD)

Run an intel NUC as main device. Superfast and doesn’t take up any space

Speaking of chinesium. Purchased an inlet manifold for the 302 Windsor.

  • Centres for carb studs were off my 2mm on one stud - elongate carb baseplate hole
  • Thermostat housing hole was not machined to correct diameter - couple of hours on dremel to grind it out to correct size
  • Stud bossed had not been machined to correct thickness - down to bolt shop for longer stainless bolts

Vender sent me a decent partial refund - but is still selling the crap

Only got it back together today so won’t know if there are any other problems until fired up tomorrow

Sounds like a good idea…

For just basic functions, you don’t need anything flash…

I like the sound of $300 laptops.

Where do you get them from.?

The only upgrade I did to the Toshiba, was a ssd upgrade…
Still going strong…

Actually…2008 was pretty much spot on.

I got mine before they integrated the Bluray drive…just a standard DVD drive for me.

Its a fantastic laptop…great screen, great speakers…Desktop replacement.

Having said that, i have mine hooked up to a 20inch external monitor…so the laptop screen is never on.

I have no reason to doubt, this laptop will last the TWENTY YEAR mark.!
And, half its life was at the gold coast, close to the ocean…

Japanese made, with quality components.

It was expensive to buy…but i salary sacrificed it, and got my moneys worth…

20 years, vs 2.5 years…

What a joke…

From where?

Couldn’t have been USA… surely.

Just off eBay - delivered from Sydney.

Air gap dual plane inlet for square bore 4 barrel

Doesn’t matter what the Brand Name on the box, EVERYTHING is made in China these days. :unamused:

Never buy anything HP, proprietary components, US company, chinese made with in built corners cut right off.

Dell too, same crap.

been on a dark humour/joke binge… collecting dark jokes.

Well…
Got off “lightly” with the laptop…turns out is was just the screen.

Got them a bit cheaper on price too…$450.
Thats still $650 in repairs, in 2.5 yrs…

Also…

Walking towards my car, i saw a teenager walk out of the shopping centre…

Brandishing a AK74 gel blaster…with a red tip.

Walking in the wide open car park, people looking at him, not a care in the world…

Of course, i pulled him aside…

Asked "Are you aware, its illegal and very dangerous, to display these in public.??

Nah…!

Someone is likely to call the police, report you…SWAT team response, weapons charges against you…if they don’t shoot you first…you don’t want that, do you.?

Nah…!

Really Good idea, to put it in a bag, then…"

Sheesh…if i hadn’t seen it with my own eyes…
Like, really…!!!

:disappointed: :confounded:

Welcome to the age of I couldn’t give a fuck.

Arsehole. Actually should have jammed it up his arse. Would be hidden from public sight then and abide by the law  bahaha

Sir what are you doing. Just helping this kid abide by the law   :+1:

Why was it not in it’s box, surely the retailer would have put it in it’s box and not let mr nah walk out like that.

Kid probably chucked the box the second he walked out the store.

I on the other hand like to keep the box as it keeps all the pieces together in one handy location and makes storage more convenient as I don’t currently have any racks yet to display them yet

Also would come in handy if I decided to move them on and sell them

But surely the store explained the laws behind gel blasters at the point of sale, sounds like they didn’t

There is always the possibility it was private sale in a public space for peace of mind and “safety”, I mean to say it may not have been sold in the box if it was a private sale, nor with the Qld police pamphlet
