Hope you didn’t break anything too badly!
Na all good, was just some machinery breaks that we’ve already fixed. Well for the most part
Oh yes, that old Chestnut… know it only too well!
Great afternoon out on the water, everything came back in one piece and the Rescue Kayak managed to stay in the back of the Patrol for a change!
Again, Hatch Tape is a very important piece of gear to have in the toolbox with this hobby.
Shit flipping and somersaulting into the water at high speed is like impacting concrete… things bend and buckle and come apart quite easily.
Had a monster stack with the Mad Flow on 4S, and yet somehow held together, unlike yesterday, but after it self righted and I brought it back to shore… ALL three lengths of Hatch Tape had been torn off, but was enough for it to take the impact and keep the Boat in one piece and afloat.
That sounds like awesome fun. I wouldn’t let me behind the wheel
You would love it mate!
They are a psychotic, twitchy, unpredictable freak of a Speedboat, absolutely insane to operate and a whole lotta fun, and that’s when on standard 3S!
Jam 4S parts up their arse and things only get more extreme and violent!
The other Deep-V Speedboats are awesome in the wind and chop, very capable and controllable…but where’s the fun in that!
Many RC Boat freaks on YouTube have much more expensive boats that push over 100MPH, and yet they still all love their old Mad Flow F1 Tunnel Hulls.
I wouldn’t recommend one as a starter Boat as they are a bloody handful to control, but once you get into the hobby a bit deeper, they are definitely the most fun and excitement you can have with your pants still on!
That’s awesome to hear haha
I love this part “Jam 4S parts up their arse and things only get more extreme and violent!”
I told ya Doc, we require moar power
This is a great example of the shit that I watch for entertainment when it comes to my lifetime of playing with Electronics and coming from a family of Electricians.
Might sound like left handed Swahili nonsense to most people, but this is the sort of stuff that I apply to everything I build, whether Gelblasters, Rock Crawlers, Speedboats or Aircraft… Electronics are the heart of ALL of them to achieve the maximum performance!
Also an undeniable fact why those OVONIC batteries are so shit house… as the mathematics and science Electrical wise simply prove that there’s absolutely NO reason why they failed so miserably under closely calculated demands from their rated capacities.
The MAJOR details that this bloke never discussed is the importance of the Wire sizing that has to be applied to his whole explanation about Hydraulic pressure etc. when dealing with Voltages and pressure (Amps).
The wire size, connectors/plugs and RESISTANCE are ESSENTIAL in calculating how to move voltage/current from one place to another!
If you don’t calculate this throughout the whole system, you may as well throw everything else out the window.
I hear ya loud and clear!
Also got the twitchy finger on the “buy now” button for some small SMC/CHNL 6S 1200mAh single little battery packs that can fit inside the hull and the 50A/300A 2-6S ESC could easily handle!
Would have to downsize the KV of the current 2800KV motor though, as it would easily be hitting 70 000rpm… whereas 50 000rpm is the safest limit to plan for reliable use.
The current ESC setup I fitted for 4S is around 42 000rpm, which is quite a bit higher than the stock 30 000rpm.
The ideal mix of 6S would require a 2200KV motor at the maximum, but realistically a 2000KV would be the safest bet for the electrical systems to be able to run with the least amount of heat.
Interesting stuff and makes sense. Sounds similar to rc planes how you run a certain size prop depending on your power systems capabilities. Motor KV etc it’s all got to work together.
Mixed day out on the Weir this afternoon.
Over the moon to have the 4S CNHL batteries arrive,
and physically fit inside the Mad Flow F1 just perfect, but has possibly lost its self righting function due to the slightly heavier batteries.
Great for holding the Bow down on the psychopath of a Tunnel Hull boat by putting the CG further forward, but Bow down when upside down doesn’t allow the rear of the Left hand pontoon to be in the water and flood to self right.
Maybe it was also to do with the fact that it was blowing a gale force wind today, and the chop was almost at the point of white capping.
Can add some Wheel Weights into the left hand side if needed, or drill some flood holes in the top front of the pontoon, but is still recoverable when upside down by simply using the throttle and rudder to act as an Airboat to get back to shore!
The Mad Flow kept filling with water, and I thought it was due to the excessive swell washing over the boat… until I had a closer look and found a small hole in the back of the right hand pontoon, most likely caused by the high speed crash I had when it hit a stick floating in the water.
Will endeavour to fix that tomorrow and hoping that the weather is a lot better than today.
The CNHL batteries exceeded my expectations, to the point where I came home early and only ran half of the battery packs that I had brought with me, purely because of the shit house conditions causing each boat to flip, roll, submarine and unable to hit top speeds due to being out of the water 80% of the time being airborne over the waves.
In summary, those CNHL Batteries kicked arse and can’t wait to test them in calmer conditions, as they are at least twice as powerful as those OVONIC pieces of shite and came in at only mid 30⁰c temps after a full 8-10 minutes hammering on the shitty swell and chop… whereas the “higher” rated capacity OVONIC batteries exceeded 90⁰C after only 60 second runs on perfectly flat millpond water!
I even threw a couple in the older UDIRC ARROW, which is only rated for 3S, but I thought…fuck it, I’ve already got a heap of upgraded aftermarket ESC’s and Motors for it anyway, so got nothing to lose if it does go up in LUCAS smoke!
But nah… took a full flogging in those conditions on 4S and never even raised a sweat, with the ESC temps only 25-32⁰c at the end of a full run.
Anyrate… hopefully better conditions tomorrow and looking forward to being able to really open them up on these new batteries.
Nice one, should be calmer over the coming week from what I can see so you can put the hammer down
Was still here today, compared to Monday when all our paddocks ended up in Sydney I see with 100klm/hr wind gusts But who really knows what mother nature has in store for us. No rain that’s for sure
I never see weather forecasts, what with the whole disconnect from media sources thing , so just use the Rock on a String method!
Can be deceiving when it’s calm here in town, but a couple of kays up the hills to the Weir can make a big difference in wind and temperatures.
Nice on a blistering hot summers day in town to go and escape to, but this time of the year the winds start getting quite strong and unpredictable up there, which isn’t so bad in a river or small lake, but the Weir is a massive open body of water that can get quite nasty when the strong winds channel down through the valleys and whip up the swell and waves.
Hopefully you get some relief soon mate, as I’ve only heard from talking with a few locals over the last couple of days that SA is copping some big wind storms and apparently NSW is underwater?
I don’t follow media either for weather, I can’t as I need to plan ahead and use certain reliable sites to plan ahead for my business. If I relied on media they just complain about what’s already happened or is happening whereas I can see most things coming. I can’t bloody rely on their cockamamie bs I’d go broke.
SA copped some wind on Monday afternoon as the systems from WA and the one off yorkes clashed. Only lasted 6 hrs and picked up our paddocks and dumped it on Sydney.
Sounds like you’d be getting turbulence which rolls over hills and things out on to flats be it water or flat ground. I get that here too as wind bowls over a scrub line and hits open paddock with turbulence.
But yea only 5mm, some dirt, a dead spider and some pine needles in my rain guage and that’s the biggest rain since last year
Yes NSW got flooded big time as there was another system off the east coast I could see for days coming in before any media bothered to report it. They only like the aftermaths as it makes good viewing instead of pre warning people to be prepared. Why I can’t rely on them.
I have done my own research and learnt to read a fair bit so I can see, not an expert, or I will have big trouble with my business if I relied on media. They are hopeless.
I cancelled cropping in January as I can see it was going to be a dry year and it would fail. On the back of last years failure I would go broke.
I can’t do that why I invest time in to learning a bit about the weather, bom and other sites have things that are good enough for me, not a professional weatherman, but good enough for me to get a good gauge on what is happening so I can plan ahead.
Apologies for the essay but hope that explains things. Nice low 20’s days ahead in SA for the next week and a half
A great detailed response with plenty of personal experience thrown in… definitely doesn’t make it an essay, that’s my reputation for those around here!
I’m exactly the same mate, a whole lifetime working outdoors and recording weather observations on farms twice a day for MANY years… certainly don’t need BOM or the News Weather Reports to know what’s going on.
I get it all the time where friends/family/locals are banging on about some sort of “forecasted” weather event, and I just call bullshit from what I know from years of experience knowing the tiny little telltale signs of what the weather is actually going to do!
Yes, this town is built into the foothills of the Darling Range, and I’ve lived and worked across many properties both on the escarpment and along the flats, so am quite in tune how the wind, clouds, rain and temperatures vary greatly in the many small areas that exist along the whole stretch.
I already knew before heading up to the Weir today that it was going to be a shitshow, as the last few days have been warm and sunny, and yet the barometer has been dropping a little and the afternoon/evenings getting colder pretty early in the day.
Tonight is windy in town but very warm compared to the last couple of freezing nights… but freezing nights mean a beautiful sunny day to follow, whereas a sudden warm and windy night means that there’s a front moving in somewhere and rain is on the way.
Will wake up tomorrow and suss out the barometer (which still isn’t dropping very far yet), hygrometer and wind speed/direction, and that’s a sure sign of what we are going to expect for the next few days.
Hopefully we can send some fresh WA rain your way sooner than later!
Strong Easterlies are good for fine hotter weather, Westerlies are a nice average sunny day, Southeast/SouWesterlies are crappy grey and rainy days, whereas North Westerlies are BATTON DOWN THE HATCHES!
Today was strong Southeasterlies…,…so no surprises up in the hills whatsoever really.
That right there my man. I had a full week of frosts last week. Always a beautiful sunny day after a frost, but I could see it with the national maps I look at with 3 systems head butting each other. But also the other thing with no rain about you will get frosts. I don’t have a barometer.
I watch what WA gets as normally if Perth is getting good rains it will go along the coast in around 2 days time and it will be good. The bom radar is all they are good for to see this. But last year and this year anything coming across from Perth has been diffused by systems off the east coast by the time it gets here and being piggy in the middle end up with fa. Ocean temps have risen.
SA has sharks suiciding on our beaches because they can’t breath and all sorts of marine life as there is no oxygen in the water due to the eastern high rainfalls as far as I read in to it. Not sure on that above my pay grade, but algae, higher ocean temps.
But I look back at history and ignore those climate change idiots. Had a big drought during WW1 and before WW1 was the Federation drought which we are already near the WW1 drought and east coast floods taking out lot’s of stock, hopefully it’s not as bad as the Federation drought that took 50 years to recover stock numbers in Australia. I’ll be dead by then for sure
There is fa hay available to feed mine with, any you can find is at a premium price. There is no hay on the east coast, all been fooked by floods. NSW are destocking now as they can’t feed them with mud.
I preplanned and will hold my own patch. Sheep eat bushes too, and shelter from cold winds I was bit worried about my new born lambs with that system rolled in Monday but I preplanned as could see it coming and put them in paddocks I have scrub shelter for them. 2 days before a fkn warning alert went out from the bom for graziers. Too fkn late to let you know an hour before it hits.
Why I do my own looking now and don’t waste my time with media.
Have you ever considered putting in a Tagasaste paddock mate?
We grew plenty for our Goat/Pig/Sheep/Cattle/Horse Farm and there’s nothing better as a hardy no maintenance feed shrub.
They are cheap, require feckall water or any care whatsoever, grow like a weed, self seed themselves, full of good stock feed nutrients, live for about 5 years and produce plenty of feed depending upon how many stock you need to supplement as to how many you need to chuck in the ground.
Just thinking outside the square for something that might be able to help you out, not knowing if you have tried this plant before?
Yep got some lucerne bushes here. Might even broadacre it if this keeps up.
But yea got hundreds of acres of tea tree bushes that help out with the feed when your grasses don’t grow due to conditions. Trouble is rounding the buggers up out of it when you need to do something, why you need a bike.
Getting set up for something to keep me busy if the weather doesn’t want to play the game tomorrow.
Have already previously made up a DEANS 10AWG Dual Battery to XT60 ESC Series Lead to run twin DEANS 2S batteries as 4S to the various standard XT60 ESC’s…
but now fitting a few different higher output 2S-6S FLYCOLOR ESC’s, more adaptor leads are on the to-do list!
That’s the beauty of adaptor leads, giving unlimited combinations to be made available for every single type of battery that is on hand, from 4S to 12S and anything inbetween!
I originally planned to use the XT90’S on my ESC and Adaptor Leads, but the EC5 Plugs really overshadow the XT’s when it comes down to high voltage/Amps and lowest resistance.
The most important part is that you need batteries with at least 12AWG wires to start with, or 10AWG to be perfect… but 80% of batteries and ESC’s are fitted with 14AWG wiring, which means that any plug/connector over 60A is a complete waste of time and money.
For example, all of my RC SPEEDBOATS run 14AWG wiring from the battery plugs to the ESC and everything in-between.
Fitting larger connectors than XT60’s would be a complete waste of time.
But to have 12AWG batteries and 10AWG ESC wires, there’s a definite benefit in stepping up to XT90’s or EC5’s for much better power delivery with less voltage losses and generated heat in the system.
The TURNIGY and CNHL batteries that I’m running are 12AWG, so fitting EC5 Connectors will make a good smooth performance flow compared to a 14AWG wired battery and XT60 plugs, especially when wired in series or parallel.
Anyrate… enough rambling, just happy to be playing with Electronics again!
