Offshoot RC Models/Drone Hobby Thread

Oh come on Doc, :joy:

I mentioned that but you knew what you doing as modern ESC have 3v per cell cut off so they do not go up in flames. Not the ole Nimh packs we are used to that you could drain the arse out of in 4 minutes

Problem solvered. Wait till you stick a 3S on a Mabuchi 540 silver can. Fk they fly then  Don’t blow up either :+1:

Only ever had 2S NiMH batteries back in my TAMIYA 1/10 racing days for the big can brushed 540 Race Motors… couldn’t begin to imagine how they would fly with modern 3S Brushless 540 motors :astonished:

Just test driving it then with all the electronics/battery precariously perched on top of the chassis.

Bloody thing has plenty of speed on 2S, and plenty of torque in both hi/lo speed, but better slow throttle control in low gear.

@Maiphut , another Funny feckup again, forgot to tighten the grub screw on the front tailshaft, so was in 2WD the whole time and still crawled over anything that I put in front of it, but when hit full throttle in high gear it was spinning the rear wheels and doing donuts on the wooden floor!

When I tested with the 3S battery on the bench, it went twice as fast, so disconnecting the front driveshaft and plugging in the 3S battery, this little thing will FLY!

Yea they fly and you don’t need to upend your bank acc for race motors.

They really do, as long as the modern esc is rated for 2-3s which they are common now. You just put in a 3S and watch out on a standard Tamiyas silver can they hoot :+1: Cheapest upgrade and they shit all over those 100 dollar gold motors and crap I could never afford. Blow them out the water all on a stock Mabuchi 540 silvercan and they do not fry the motors got 2 on the clodbuster I’ve hammered shit out of on 3S.

No need for race motors and stuff. :+1:

Yes definitely the beauty of modern technology and advancements in these things over the years, which I’m slowly only just finding out now!

This ESC has 2S/3S compatible in the advertisement and printed on the side of the ESC itself, but was still a little dubious about trying it out.

The people who fried these in their online reviews were using large capacity 3S batteries, in large scale cars with larger motors and high gear ratios… so obviously didn’t do their homework using these little 35A ESC’s in such high stress combinations

This is all connected to a tiny 2435 4600kV motor in a lightweight little 1/16 scale ute running through very low geared diffs and a reduction gearbox…so VERY little stress indeed and free to get up plenty of revs at low speed instead of sitting just on stalling point the whole time getting boiling hot through high resistance… hence why going for a mid-range lower torque/higher speed motor to suit this particular setup :ok_hand:

The only trouble I’ve run in to when cranking it on 3S with a Tamiya Vanquish I melted the solder motor wires it got so hot it desoldered itself.

Either my shit solder skills or too much power it was 4w drifting around 80klm/hr . I put connectors on and soldered those in and been fine since at full flat 80 something amps. I think I need new tyres for that one

Yea took me a bit of learning curve too when they changed from the Nicads and Nimhs to Lipo. They are the go, more Power :pinched_fingers:

And people wonder why I use XT60 connectors

That desoldering issue was something that I was quite aware of back in the day.

Even though using the old crimp end fittings, they would get red hot, lose their tension and fall off at the slightest bump

Only fixed it through stealing some aluminium crimps from my old mans electric cabinet and crimping the brushes directly to the motor wires! :astonished:

4600kV @ 7.4V = 34 000 RPM.
4600kV @ 11.1V = 51 060 RPM, or a bit over 55 000 RPM on a fully charged 3S battery :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Now your getting it  What crawler

You’ll be right, great to talk about this here. You are going to love it. Heaps of fun with these things .

I’m no expert but I have fun with them

I got told off for spending money, I blamed it on you

Yes it’s certainly been very entertaining already, and only just starting out again!
Can’t wait until early March when the other vehicles arrive, along with a pile of other bits :+1:

Another little trick that I used to do was to fit large Capacitors to the speed controllers, which were able to dump massive amounts of power to the motor on takeoffs or coming out of corners and hitting full throttle.

Like having a power band or Turbo feature at your disposal when the occasion required it :joy:

It was my fault, I put a 10t brushed motor on a stock Tamiya ESC which are renowned for shitting themself crp for some reason.

Hmm somethings on fire… live and learn

That was my whole disbelief in these ā€œupgradedā€ blue motors being sold for these little things, but use the TINY little standard plugs and wires to power them

Knowledge of electricity tells you straight away that this is a BAD idea!

Yeah right don’t know that one but sounds like an awesome trick. :+1:

I know the current ESC’s have programmable Turbo boost function. Then that stupid brake before reverse function but they do that as more power these days and turns your drivline into bits of shit everywhere . But you can program that out.

Dial the throttle down and since now they gone 2.4Ghz I can drive over the hill and can’t see where it’s gone. Good fun

You’d remember those crystals in the radio set and get crossed up with your mate on the same band and he’d drive it in to a fence for you

Oh yes, the great fun of attending racing events with a box full of all the different frequency little crystals and trying to make sure that everyone had their own different frequency… well that was the idea :joy:

The modern ESC’s obviously now have Capacitors built in for such Boost functions, whereas was unheard of back then.

I’m still getting used to that forward, pause, reverse function, as never really touched reverse back in the racing days except for using as a ā€œhandbrakeā€ to slide around corners :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Now using these rocks crawlers, reverse gets used just as much, if not more, than the forward throttle!

Oh yep I see what you saying. I was bit skeptical of those myself and spent more hours on utoob and watched heaps of vids and for the MN82 Neebrc seemed like the go to for that.

Anyway I’ve got that but no fkn car yet

Yea the newer ESC’s that are tailroed for rock crawling like we are getting in to should have a default drag brake so when you go down hill it doesen’t roll away when you let off forward throttle. Should do auto programmed in, the more expensive ESC’s you can change it and tune it with a computer. Bit above my paygrade

Oh forgot to mention that Inorja sight . Yea had a look at that, nekmminut more tyres and shocks and all sorts  oops

I have to have meeting with the finance officer

DO NOT look at the INJORA site!

Ooops, too late :astonished::joy:

You can get cheap little brushed ESC’s that allows 2S/3S, NiMH/LiPo switching, along with the ability to change braking between different forward/reverse/all functions.

I’ve got one on the way for about $12AUD, and the online reviews are 5 star everywhere from some pretty experienced people in the hobby… so certainly don’t have to spend a fortune or have quality Brand name stuff to get the job done :+1:

Yes I know. Wheres my link  What brand

Hahaha, got me spending YOUR money for a change!:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Can be found cheaper on other sites and come on sale from time to time, such as mine at around $6USD :+1:
